Scott,
A few years ago when I installed a new top on my Spider I used xylene, I
believe.  Outdoors with gloves and goggles.  I tried several solvents we had
at work, IPA, acetone, and maybe methylene chloride, but the one that worked
the best was xylene, I believe.  Then I washed it with detergent and water.
When dry I gave it a couple coats of Krylon satin finish black paint.

One thing that also made the finished project look better was that I
reformed the inner steel banding which holds the roof in place around the
rear perimeter so that it more closely matched the profile of the body in
the curves.
