Re: 92 164S clutch replacement
Karl,
I replaced my S clutch last year and it was a learning experience. The main
stumbling/learning points were aligning the transmission pilot shaft with
the clutch plate and engaging the throwout bearing. It took me three
removals of the transmission but I got it right. No reason it should be
that way for you if you understand what to do.
I posted my notes on Verilli's 164 page under 164 clutch.
My two major lessons learned:
1. Aligning the clutch. I worked out a two-step procedure. Install the
clutch but do not tighten, leaving enough play to move the disc. Mark the
collar of the disc with chalk or similar and test mount the clutch - remove
and adjust position of the disc as indicated. Remove transmission and
tighten clutch assembly before attaching transmission final time.
2. The throw bearing operates in a pull motion to act on the pressure plate
splines (opposite of the L and LS). When installing, make sure the TO arm
is in the correct position. As you tighten the transmission, you will hear a
click/snap to indicate TO bearing is engaged properly. Note position of
clutch slave as a tell tale that all is correct.
I used two floor jacks with car mounted on ramps in rear and jacks in front.
Hope this helps.
Don
