I'm not going to say I disagree... but I will say there seems to be no
clear concensus (on the welding newsgroup) as to whether it is
necessary. In fact, some argue that the battery itself is a very good
surge suppresor, so it might be better to leave it connected.
What is certain: If you are welding on a car, make sure the ground
clamp is as close as possible to the part that you are welding.
Preferably it should be attached to the same piece of metal. That
current is going to take the path of least resistance. By watching
where you attach the ground you'll keep your ECUs from being part of
that path.
Anecdotal evidence: I tallied about 100 man hours of welding on my
Milano last year (I used over 20lbs of mig wire in the process.) I did
not disconnect anything. I was very good about the placement of the
ground clamp. I had no problems.
