RE: Valve clearances & Battery disconnection
Hello all -
I believe the purpose for valve clearance is to insure that the valve will
still close fully when everything is fully warmed up. You do not want the
clearance to ever completely go away because then the valve will not
properly contact the seat and then terrible things happen as the valve
overheats and self-destructs. The valves stretch over time, thus requiring
clearance adjustment.
Disconnecting the negative post on the battery first is simply a safer way
to do it. You cannot shock yourself while disconnecting the negative post
simply by touching the car and post at the same time. Once the negative is
disconnected, the same applies to the positive as there's no longer a closed
loop between the battery and the car.
