registering nontitled car in Calif?

Anyone in California have experience with registering an old car that has no
title documents, no plates, and has not been in the DMV system for years? It
is a big hassle, or if you have a bill of sale or equivalent and get a
chassis number inspection is a reasonable process? I am going to look at a
Giulietta Sprint today that fits this description and wonder if it's worth
the trouble to make it legal.  Thanks
