Sealing doors
In #109 Tom Callahan goes into great detail as to how Jaguar and other
manufacturers installed interior door panel 'protectors'.
*******
For modern cars, I would hope manufacturers have figured out how to seal
the side glass tight enough so there should be no or very little water
even entering the interior of the door. What with speakers, electric
window lifts, wiring for the mirrors, and whatever triggers the locking
mechanism I could well imagine the innards of a single modern car door
is considerably more complex than what goes on behind the dash of our
older Alfas.
Tom goes on to ask: "Biba - did you do all of this on Joe's Giulietta
spider? :-)"
Actually I told Joe 'She' shouldn't be allowed to play in the rain. I
doubt very much, unless by pure accident, Joe's Spider will ever see
rain. While the car when first received could be described as more than
somewhat rough, there wasn't all that much rust, especially inside the
doors. Unfortunately my before / after shots of the insides aren't all
that dramatic. However, the factory paint / sealant didn't reach to the
top and there was a coating of rust there. No longer. A lot of handwork,
epoxy primer, sealant, and then coating with rust resisting paint should
keep it rust free inside.
Get this: Joe informed me when picking up the car the vinyl covered door
panels, as far as he knows, are original. He'd had the seats recovered
not too long before dismantling around 18 years ago, but I always
wondered why the orange / red welting on the door panels was somewhat
faded and the seat welting wasn't.
Fortunately the drains were completely open (except for a small handful
of broken side glass shards).
