help: shift lever noise/vibration

Dear Alfisti,

Any suggestions on how to remove a shift lever vibration and noise that 
occurs in all gears, is not related to the shift knob, appears to come 
from inside(?) the shifter shaft, and is eliminated (the noise, not 
vibration) by applying slight pressure to the shift rod in a lateral 
direction or in the same direction as the shift rod (i.e., if in 2 or 4 
push down, if in 3 or 5 push up).

TIA; the Alfa in question is a '67 Duetto.
