Treating rust

Hi everyone

My '82 GTV6 is running perfectly now, gearbox aside. Now I'm
concentrating on tackling the rust. Is there another option for small
(say 2-5 square centimetre) patches of rust to be "fixed"? I was
thinking of sanding the rust off, then applying primer & whatever other
paint retouching would be needed. Any ideas? Would my approach work?
