Air pumps

I really do appreciate the nice handful of off-digest replies I received
as to what an air pump is supposed to do (pump air) - oh why didn't I
say, 'accomplish' and how does it really go about doing this? I blew air
into the opening of the (???) valve thingy (Fred, don't listen) which
screws onto the ugly thingy which in turn screws onto the top of the
four into one cast exhaust manifold and got zippo air coming through.
Pray tell, where does all of this wonderful oxygen from the air pump
really go? Yes, I can blow through the removed 'valve' - barely but
after that, where does it then go?

No one even made a remote attempt at addressing the Vast Quantities of
carbon in the head / manifold on a freshly rebuilt (but not by me)
engine.

Please talk to me about what to look for, what to test, how important is
the air pump really, would a plugged catalytic convertor cause the
build-up, or would it take a combination of plugged cat and purposely
plugged up hose to exhaust manifold's added on stuff?

There are three outlets on an air pump. One goes to the previously
mentioned hose to the exhaust manifold. Where do the other two go
specifically? And what are they specifically supposed to accomplish.

I know I'm being a nudge and it will be awhile before reinstalling the
engine, but hate to reinstall one which is obviously having combustion
problems.
