Oil temp gauge and sender for late spiders

Hey cats,

I understand that late spiders have an oil temp
gauge. Where does it take the reading? Can it
be adapted to older 2 liter Spica cars? I was
thinking of adding this to my Alfetta and maybe
my GTV. I've found that VDO has an oil plug to
replace the drain plug with a sender, but I want
to know how the late spiders did it first. Is
it electrical or machanical?

Also, do all oil temp gauges have a standard 
sender signal? Can senders and gauges be mixed
and matched? Or does one need to stick to a 
manufacturer set?
