rear bearing cap seals

Esteemed Digesti,
The rubber tubular seals that flank the rear main bearing cap are a problem.
The excellent Intereurope Workshop Manual No. 133 indicates a special tool
used to drive them in. Having no such tool, the seal was pressed into it's
cavity in the block, and I carefully filed the leading edge of the bearing
cap where it was skinning the seal on it's way down. The cap has seated
properly, but there is about half a centimeter of the tube seal sticking up
from the sump surface of the block. There must be a better way to get this
seal positioned properly. Please advise, alfisti. Should these two tubular
seals receive some liquid sealant as part of the process?
I remain humble in the realm..
