164 basket case in MI

digesters,

there is 1994 164LS listed on autotrader.com for $2000
at Kal motors in taylor MI. it is listed as "needs
work". when i spoke with kal (?) he said it "came in
as a repo, with timing belt blown - better hurry and
snatch it up before shop guy tosses on a new belt and
bumps the value from 2k to 8."

well, i popped in yesterday for a peak. here's what i
saw in my cursory inspection:

auto tranny, ~50k

exterior straight, many dings, front bumper hanging on
driver's side. no apparent serious collision damage.
paint on hood seriously gouged and scratched.

interior is tan leather, in mediocre condition. lots
of dirt, 1-2" tear in rear seat.

engine bay: 24V, complete mess. no sign of timing
belt. timing covers were removed. AC hoses were
disconnected - hanging open. serpentine acc. belt was
laying on top - severely cracked and weathered. rust
build-up on all pulleys. fuel injector electrical
connector boots are seriously dried and damaged. much
other rubber looks weathered. very likely someone had
the hood off for a while and exposed to sunlight/rain
(my '87 milano had better looking original rubber!)

overall, this car is (like most alfas) far from Too
Good To Be True (tm). if it was running, maybe 3-4k.
for the purpose of budgeting cost of ressurection,
with the overall signs of neglect, i'd guess the belt
failed at speed rather than detensioner failure on
start-up (prob had original belt). so full head
rebuild needed, probably piston replacement. looks
like many hours of work to check, clean and replace
the sundry other engine items (i.e. connectors).

if you've got a 164 with a trashed body, but excellent
internals, this *might* be worthwhile as a transplant.

FYI. no financial interest (thank god), etc.

"needs work" - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

'87 milano gold (new piston rings look like a
cakewalk, now!)
