GTV6 window trim question

On the GTV6, there's that black plastic gasket that's glued to the
bottom of the rear side window trim.  Mine has been glued back into
place several times by the p.o.  It came loose again so I just peeled it
off.  I'm wondering, does this gasket serve any function (ie. Water
seal) or is it strictly cosmetic?
