Thanks for the responses.  FWIW, Chevrolet products (at least the '77
and '78 Z28s and the '90 Suburban I've owned) have "matching numbers" in
that the last digits of the VIN do in fact correspond to the last digits
stamped in the engine block.  Why? I have no clue.  But at least for
those vehicles, a quick look at the numbers can tell you whether the
block belongs to that body.
