74 GTV gas fumes

Just recently I have begun to notice gas fumes in the
cabin of my 74 gtv.  I looked at the canister in the
trunk, though my prior experience has only been with
late model spiders, what should I check? 

Also, the gasket on the bayonette gas cap is hard as a
rock, would this contribute by not sealing the tank
and allowing fumes to escape?
