My version of this rumour suggested a long term steel contract with the Russians arising out of the FIAT 124/Lada deal in the early 60's. Of such stuff are urban legends born!

Practically, this rust problem caused FIAT to properly research and implement rust proofing techniques similar to those successfully pioneered by the Swedes. Zeibart had nothing on those Volvos and SAABs. My 86 SAAB 9000 is virtually rust free after 16 salty Canadian winters. And no, I don't wash my car frequently as it is too bloody cold!
