The black Montreal on ebay does sound that bad.  The motor is fairly easy to put back together.  He says he's got new liners for the motor which is a plus since they're SO EXPENSIVE.  My friend's got a spare Montreal motor that he's rebuilding and it's just like anyother Alfa motor.
