spider foot room

After taking my 83 spider interior apart (for soundproofing) and putting it 
back together, I seem to have less room for my foot to fit between the 
brake and the center console.  Upon closer inspection, I see 2 small holes, 
perhaps for screws, about 10 inches up from the bottom of each side panel, 
and right above where my foot rests.  I don't see anything behind the holes 
that would accept screws.  Am I missing a part?  Perhaps a bracket that 
accepts screws that would pull the two sides of the console closer 
together?  Thanks for any help.
