Fixing climate control: major pain?

I need to tackle the climate control again on my 75 as it has become
impossible to shut off the heat.

My mechanic last year stripped out the dash and made things much better but
since then I'm sure the cable to the heater valve has disconnected.

So, has anybody tackled a refurbishment of the climate control (non-A/C) and
how many days/weeks/months do I need to set aside?

I presume I need to remove part, most or all of the dash to do this?

I already know that even something as minor as refitting the climate control
panel, getting that little rubber seal properly in place can be a real pain
in the ass. Is the rest of the dash a monster of a job? Am I really going to
regret tackling it myself and should I just pay my mechanic to do it?
