Fuelishness

Yo, kids -

When we bought the Milano, Todd Spruell delivered a
lengthy lecture about how we should NEVER UNDER ANY
CIRCUMSTANCES run anything but super-premium fuel in
it. That would be the stuff labelled 91, if I recall
correctly, though what I remember most was the shock
of paying that much money for a gallon of gas...and
for the first couple of years, we followed that
recommendation faithfully. As time wore on, gas got
more expensive, and we got poorer, I began using
"Plus," and the car seemed to be OK with it. Once or
twice I filled up with regular unleaded, and as long
as I drove gently, or at a fairly steady speed, there
was no problem, though I'd get some rattling on hard
acceleration.

When we moved from Tennessee, we drove the car to
California. That was early Summer 2000, and pump
prices were up to $2 or more across the country, so we
made the trip entirely on 87 octane fuel. After we got
here, I continued the use of regular unleaded, and for
some reason - possibly the difference in formulation
here, using MBTE instead of methanol - the V6 hasn't
pinged once on it, however hard I drive.

The 2-liter Berlina, however, rattles like crazy on 87
if I give it any boot at low rpm...
