Re: 164 trunk springs

I am also in the middle of converting my 164S from the trunk struts to
springs. I have been told that the right side S/Q trunk springs have been
discontinued (left is still available). Does anyone know if this is true or
if one can use two left springs instead of one of each type? Alternatively,
does anyone in digest-land have a set available?
I did some body work on the trunk lid recently. The sheet metal where
the hinge bolts to the lid had cracked as a result of some accident damage
in the car's past. I welded it up and repainted the area, but couldn't get
the lid to sit flat (right front corner stood 1/4" higher than it should
have). At first I thought the lid was bent, but after disconnecting the
hinges and just laying it in place it fit perfectly so I suspect some
misalignment on the hinge's part. Has anyone tried using some kind of
bracing to tie the two hinges together? The problem seems to be that because
of the shape of the hinges and the lousy pivot point reinforcement the
hinges want to splay out towards the fenders.
