Subject: Why a wire in my steering box?

I was just out cleaning my spare steering gear that I'm finally
getting ready to install in my '74 Spider. I noticed that it has a
wire sticking out of it. I guess the box in my car does too but I've
never noticed. So, why is there an electrical connection to the
steering gear?

Thanks,
