Re: hose fittings



Joe Elliot has e-mailed me off digest in response to my post about coolant
leaks to ask why not to use mineral based grease on coolant hoses.

In these days when a lot of automotive rubber contains synthetic, it is
probably not such an issue, but I would rather use water-based rubber
grease if I'm not sure of the composition of the rubber (which I'm
generally not).  The other reason is that the rubber grease is fairly thin,
and it's easy to apply a thin film and clean up any mess afterwards.

That's my reasoning.  I think that we have a couple of polymer/rubber
engineers on the digest, so maybe they could put us straight?
