future fuels

In speech on Feb 14, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham spoke about next
generation, high temperature gas cooled nuclear power plants. He said that the
process heat will be high enough to disassociate water into hydrogen and
oxygen. He speculated that these power plants will produce electricity during
the day, and hydrogen at night. He believes that hydrogen will have a more
important role as a source of energy. President Bush is in favor of supporting
research in this technology.

Remember, too, that an oil refinery is hardly a zero-energy proposition,
esp. when one takes into account the energy spent in getting the oil
to the refinery. A "hydrogen refinery" could simply be built on any
coastline. Rather than use photovoltaics, one could use a tidal or
wave-powered electricity plant to drive the refining process, since
you're there on the coast, anyway. All of this takes plenty of time
and engineering, of course, but it's all theoretically doable.
