worst car thing I did:

used to have fun with VW bugs (high school) carefully built my first
engine all winter long, including many new aftermarket parts obtained
via mail order and at swap meets. I spent alot of time making
sure I did it right, reading books and asking the guru's questions.

First voyage in the spring was only about 2 miles long before engine
siezed and refused to ever run again (main bearing had siezed onto
crank and spun in the case, ruining case and crank).

Problem? the new high-volume oil pump I had installed was not seated
into the camshaft slot, and although it spun a bit, didn't give anywhere
near the volume it should have. Did the warning light light up? you
bet it did, but I ignored it, thinking I had hooked it up incorrectly
when installing the engine...sigh...back to building...next motor
was bigger & worked great ;) plenty of oil pumping in that one!!
