Alfetta GTV Supercharger project



Hello digesters,

I originally inquired on the digest about the possibility of
using the SPICA crankshaft pulley on a carburetted engine to
drive a supercharger (an SC12 from a Toyota 4AGZE if you're
interested).

I've got some more questions for our US based subscribers
if nobody is bothered with me cluttering the list with
this crazy idea.

Anyway, I've abandoned the SPICA pulley idea at the moment as it's
too small and in the wrong position on the timing case I have.

However, the project continues (albeit slowly).  I've acquired
an SC12 supercharger from somebody else's failed project
(although he's building an awesome, turbocharged Berlina
instead...)

The friendly people at "Eurocarb" have come to the party with
the bits and pieces I need to modify my carburettors for
pressurisation.  If you've got Pat Braden's "Alfa Bible", you
can see a great overhead shot of a Giulietta turbo engine.
Looking at the top of the Dellorto carburettors, you can see
little pipes running into the float chambers (replacing the
normal plastic vents).  The replacement vent covers, plus
some extra seals are now awaiting installation.

I've made some enquiries about getting a custom pulley
machined up.  I tried one of the sources listed on
an Australian Toyota site, but he's not making pulleys,
although he's given me some tips.  I want to retain the
A/C on this car, so I'm looking at a pulley with an inner
V-Belt, a middle flat/ribbed belt and an outer V-Belt.
The SC12 'charger uses a ribbed belt for drive.  He's
recommended "7071" aluminium to have the pulley machined
out of, but I have no idea what this is :-)

I also have a few other issues:

1) The mechanical fuel pump and regulator will have
   to be relocated somewhere.  I think I'll blank off
   the fuel pump mount and buy an electric one to put
   in the boot, with a relocated regulator closer to
   the carburettors.  There is plenty of room for the SC12
   ones these parts are moved.

2) I need to tap the four holes on the side of the sump.
   Looking at the sparse picture collection I have, I think
   these are "air pump" mounting holes.  Again, in the Alfa
   Bible, I can see a picture with a flat plate mounted there,
   a big C style bracket coming out to cradle the air pump on
   a later SPICA car.  I'd like one of these brackets for
   reference if anybody has one :-).  This was never used
   in Australia so I think I'll have to import one from the US.
   I'll use studs here rather than bolts (that's what the factory
   did, right?

3) I need a plenum chamber that will take the boost.  I guess
   if there's a factory Giulietta turbo plenum for sale somewhere
   I would jump at that, but I suppose they're rare.  The alternative
   is to have something fabricated.  An outside possibility is
   a plenum from a Lotus Esprit Turbo, but they're thin on the ground
:-)
   Does anybody have any other suggestions?  The Giulietta turbo
   plenum isn't ideal as the intake is on top of the engine, where I'd
   like mine to be underneath (close to the outlet of the supercharger).
   Who makes these sorts of things?
