Re: heavier/lighter or the same

At standard temperature and pressure...

1- Natural gas is lighter than air. (Flammable)

2- Propane and Butane (found in warmer climates) is heavier than air.
(Flammable)

3- Carbon Dioxide is heavier. (Displaces oxygen)

4- Vapor from gasoline and fuel oils is heavier than air.
(Flammable/combustible and toxic)

5- Carbon Monoxide is just about the same as air and moves freely
depending on temperature and air currents.
(Flammable in high levels and likes to bond to your blood much more
than oxygen)

So working in a pit is either going to create an explosive, toxic and/or
oxygen deficient atmosphere. A pit is also very similar to a "confined space"
which is highly regulated by OSHA due to its hazards.

Moral of story... Put it solidly on ramps or stands, provide plenty of
ventilation, and eliminate ignition sources.
