Milano Starter

After only three starts in two days when the starter dragged a little (I
thought my battery was weak), it failed to start at all. All electrical works
OK, I can even hear the fuel pump and such, just no starter.
I ran a jumper with a switch in the middle from the positive on the battery to
the junction box on the firewall that has the red starter cable. Nothing!
Is there any other sure fire (Pun intended) way to confirm the starter as the
problem before I start pulling it off?
Speaking of pulling it, my manual doesn't show much of anything. Looks like I
need to pull the exhaust manifold and the heat shield for sure. Can I get to
everything else at that point from the top side?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and directions.
