fwd and rwd and maths

With all due respect, Mr. Campbell, who is a well-respected writer and auto
enthusiast, had this book originally published in the mid-50s. His
assertions are likely correct if we are comparing two bread-boxes on wheels,
one with power being generated by FWD, the other by RWD, with everything
else being equal. In theory, he is correct. In practice he is not because
optimal weight distribution has not been achieved in a street car using a
FWD setup. This sub-optimal weight distribution will cause the front tires
of a FWD car to exceed their limits of adhesion at a lower speed than that
of the same car with a RWD configuration. Remember, even (most) RWD cars
will understeer at the limit.
