"I think the issue that concerns enthusiasts is a more subjective area of
performance.  GM has lost touch with most enthusiasts in the last 30 years.
It's all brand positioning, market research, supplier consolidation and
manufacturing efficiency.  If you look at current press reviews of GM cars,
the common words describing their engines are "coarse", "industrial",
"agricultural", and the like.  I'm sure they assemble as easily as Lego's,
but who wants to drive one?"

I'll take a counter point on this way off topic subject.  GM has absolutely
not lost touch with most enthusiasts in the last 30 years.  In fact, they
are probably gaining ground.  The argument is better stated that they have
lost touch with us.  NASCAR is incredibly popular, and GM aims directly for
that demographic.  My father drives a new Monte Carlo and while it is
nothing like the stock car (different engine, drivetrain, chassis), it looks
a lot like the car Dale Earnhardt would run in countless ovals every Sunday.
I don't think its a coincidence that my father was a big Dale Earnhardt fan.


NASCAR may not be sophisticated, but there are a lot more NASCAR fans than
F1, touring car, rally etc combined in the US.  GM knows this and builds and
markets accordingly.
