105 brake booster
In V8 #326 Sasha Nackovski (great Aussie name) quite thoroughly answers
Bert Steginga's (#324) questions regarding the 105 brake booster.
However...and nevertheless..(and not surprising)...I'll add a few
comments: If one is a do it yourselfer, go ahead and strip down the
booster. Do make a note of every part's location and orientation. Look
down the 'barrel' and if it's not badly (hopefully not at all) scored,
it is rebuildable without sleeving.
When you're dismantling, betcha dollars to beer, you'll find two things:
There will be brake fluid on the inside large diaphragm and the (I've
preached on this beforeBut It's Very Important) the plunger valve,
[which is located under (actually above, as the booster is mounted in
the car) the (small) diaphragm / spindle], will be frozen in its bore.
After thoroughly cleaning (and getting the frozen plunger valve with
seal removed), I use three steel rods (wooden dowels might work okay),
tightly wrapped in 400 wet & dry sandpaper and liberally coated with
brake fluid to (by hand) run up and down the various bores whilst
turningso as to very slightly roughen the bores in a somewhat diamond
pattern. This especially includes the small bore for the plunger valve.
Clean up and reassemble with IAP's or (?) Major kit, 7" diaphragm
($46.25) & Pentagonal air valve kit ($58.95). (Sorry, don't have any
Australian supplier's namesunlesss Re-Originals perhaps). Change /
bleed through brake fluid every year, two years at most.
IAP's new (I'm assuming) brake booster is $236.95. Especially if you
have a '69 with dual boosters, you'll be saving bunches (provided the
bores aren't scored).
Oh yeah, when re-assembling, I use ATE's (blue) brake grease ('cause
that's what I have). Seems to work quite well.
Side note: Just as I use STP to coat everything but the bores (they get
oil only) when rebuilding engines, I'm a big believer there should be
lubrication on All moving partsbefore it / they are 'started up' for
the first time.
Happy hangovers,
