Sure the timing could make a difference.  That's why if a timing belt 
breaks (think of it as retarding the timing by a few hundred degrees) 
the piston/valve clearance is reduced to zero.  For example, as the 
piston approaches TDC on the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve begins 
to close to get out of the piston's way--retard that cam a little too 
much and you've got trouble.
