Holey notches, Batman!



Joel,
The Right Honorable Mr. Neely will probably respond, but moving "5 holes"
means, to me, moving the locking bolt 5 holes in the appropriate direction
and turning the (Vernier calibrated) cam just enough for it to align and go
through.  That's not far.  If you literally twisted the cam enough to align
5 holes down the line, you'd have something between a diesel and a static
sculpture, a base for that nice glass coffee table top.  Probably all three,
in quick and depressing sequence.

As for our wise men from the East, popular in Christendom this time of the
year, but trailered hundreds of miles from the Vast NoAlfa Desert by AROO
International Stalwart Doug Zaitz:

I thought everyone had a ball,
Driving out to rescue them on call,
But I've heeded the word,
Says my limerick's a t*rd,
And consider it's suffered Pratt fall.

OK.  I'll quit.  For a while.

But nobody sent me a hint of how to tell what's making the noise in my rear
axle...

And if YOUR notches stink, you need either to change your oil more often, or
check the SPICA for leakage into the sump.  The other possibilities are too
obvious to mention.

Notches... holes.
  Last time i was adjusting my cam timing, I didn't see no stinking notches.
Does notches mean degrees?  One thing i learned fast, when i first adjusted
my cams, was that one hole = many degrees.  When i advanced my intake cam
shaft 5 holes, the engine  would not start !  I felt lucky that i had rolled
the engine over by hand to make sure the valves didn't hit the pistons.
Degrees of rotation are very small increments of rotation, not major ones
like a whole hole of rotation ( i like that "whole hole" sound !).
  I find all this notch and hole stuff pretty misleading for someone who
might be adjusting their cams for the first time.
