Re: How to be a REAL Alfa Racer

 Memo of a great weekend:

Spent $540 getting the brakes on the GTV-6 renewed (the rear brakes I
let a mechanic install for $250, they're too hard without a lift. The
rest was rotors and pads.)

Sent $295 to SCCA for Saturday's passing clinic and Sunday's time
 trial.

Drove 4 hours in traffic to the track (Thunderhill) late on
Friday--driving reasonably fast on 505, came closer to
a white car in front of me (maybe 1/4 mile away) which swerved onto
the shoulder. After I passed the white car, it turned back on the Hwy
and turned on its red light.

WARNING!!CHP now has "in motion" radar front and back. Told me I was
 going 87, wrote me for 80 (in a 70).

Got to the motel, registered, and went for gas. Whoops--the gas cap
was left behind at some previous stop. Stuffed the gas pipe full of
plastic, hoping that would do the trick of sealing. Went to sleep.

Showed up at the track at 8:00--the tech guy didn't spy my "gas cap",
so out I went for the first of the lead follow, pass be passed
 sessions.

On the second lap, some big round object (probably a stone) came
sailing through the air and made a big bang as it hit the top of the
windshield while I was doing about 80.

After 1 1/2 of these sessions, the corner workers spied gas
coming out of the tank and black flagged me. Spent the rest of the
morning (starting at 10:30) going to all three parts stores in Willow
and found nothing even remotrely capable of being a gas cap for a
GTV-6.

Tried to call a couple of alfisti friends, one of who was coming up
the next day, to somehow get a lead in Sacramento, or whatever. Got
nothing but voice mails. Decided (at 12:30) that I had no way to know
if the friend would bring a cap for the next day since I had only
gotten his voice mail. Said the hell with it, and drove the 3 hours
back home. (faster without traffic to deal with)

 GREAT weekend!

oh yes--the windshield now has a significant hole/break in it.

 now wasn't THAT fun?
