Oil temp gauge and fitting

Hey cats,

I've been wondering over the last year about an oil temp
gauge. A 74 2L engine went in my Alfetta and the sensor/switch
hole below the alternator was just plugged up by my mechanic.
I wanted to use this for something. Is it a good spot to measure 
the oil temp? Does anyone know the thread fitting for this hole and 
if an oil temp sensor would fit? Is there an oil temp sensor at all
that would fit?
