164 front end noise

Can anyone help identify the possible souce of a grinding/scraping noise
in my '91 164? (I know, very tough without actually hearing it...)
This noise seems to come from the front end, and it's definitely wheel
speed related. It's a metal-on-metal scraping sound, with a frequency
once per wheel revolution (scrapes for about 1/2 the duration of a wheel
revolution). I don't think it's brakes, because pushing the brake pedal
doesn't change the noise (and I removed the calipers and spun the wheels
last weekend and nothing changed). I can't find any visible
interference anywhere, though the sound gets louder with the wheels
turned left (doesn't need to be full lock). The sound isn't there when
the car is cold, and gets loudest when at low speeds just after a high
speed run (turning at the end of a highway exit ramp, for example).
Only other symptom is that the right front wheel doesn't spin very
freely. With the car in neutral and the front end off the ground, if I
spin the left wheel, it coasts around a few revolutions. The right
wheel, if pushed, almost immediately stops, and it feels stiff to turn.
My first guess is a bad CV joint in the axle, or something like that.
This right axle was replaced with a rebuilt unit about 7 months ago...
Any other guesses? The sound is intermittent, so I'm having trouble
getting it to make the noise for my mechanic. The car also makes a
little clunk when first applying torque after a stop, though that may
just be engine mounts.
