Those half moon rubbers

So what's the deal with those half moon rubber plugs at the rear of 4
cylinders?  What is their purpose?  In other news I made some progress
on the street Alfetta:  replaced the valve cover gasket & the rubber
plugs & also replaced the oil pan gasket.  I was fortunate enough to
know someone that has a parts washer.  The oil pan is completely clean &
the old gasket came off easily.
