RE: Bending the Wiper Arm Assembly on a 164

Rich,

The drivers side wiper arm also contacts the hood on my 94 164. I wonder if
"OEM" wipers would improve the situation. If you find any easy solutions,
please let me know.

Subject: Bending the Wiper Arm Assembly on a 164

This morning on my way to work in heavy rain, the driver's side wiper
arm on my 164 got loose and ended up traveling about three inches off
the windshield, instead of stopping its arc at a nearly vertical
position. I removed the retaining nut, repositioned the arm, and
tightened the nut down. The wiper now has the correct travel.

I did notice that the wiper arm assembly makes quite a bit of contact
with the underside of the hood (both arm and hood have paint missing
where they rub). I noticed this in the past, and tightened the arm
assembly down as far as possible to minimize contact. Still, it rubs
rather hard (you can see the hood move when the arm retracts under it).
Has anyone put the arm in a vise and gently bent the first section of it
(from the point where it attaches to the splined shaft to the first
hinged section of the arm)? The piece is of open box section
construction with reinforcing pieces built in. The last thing I want to
do is put a crease in this part trying to bend it. Anyone have prior
experience with this problem?
