Alfetta engine type numbers and dipstick locations

In AD8-0249 Jacob Haagerup, who has a motore tipo 01608 in his GT 1600 Junior
'M', was thrown for a loop by John Fielding's statement that "The 1800cc motor
was designated as 016.78."
Do please relax, Jacob. The Alfetta 1.8 had motore tipo 01608 from 1972,
motore tipo 01608*X from 1975, motore tipo 01678 from 1980, motore tipo
01608*S in the Alfetta GT in 1974 before joining the 'X' in '75. The motore
tipo 01678 was also used in the Giulietta 1.8 from 1979. In the Alfa 90 the
1.8 was tipo 06202, also used in the early 75, which became an 06168 (with
Motronic injection), then 61201, then 61202, except when it had the turbo :
06134 for the original turbo, 61203 for the last turbo version, 06158 for the
formidable Turbo Evoluzione.

The motor type designations can cover major differences, such as the type of
induction or the drilled crank, or very minor differences. If anyone is
wondering, the carbureted 1750 had a tipo 00548 engine, and the Spica injected
1750 had an 00551.

Also in AD8-0249 John Heidemann is confused by John Fielding's statement that
all motors had the spin-on oil filter which was fitted on the exhaust side of
the block on the timing cover (below the alternator), and that the dipstick
was fitted adjacent to the distributor on the opposite side. John H (that one,
not this one) has the 2 litre "and the dipstick is definitely on the left hand
sides where the exhaust is located".

I can't address the dipstick location on carbureted Alfetta two-liters such
as John's, but the USA Spica two-liters had two different dipstick locations,
both on the exhaust side like John's, but one in the block and one in the pan,
consequently having two different blocks, pans, dipstick tubes AND dipsticks,
and woe unto him (or her) who gets them mixed up; they are NOT interchangable,
at least if one wants a true reading of the oil level. (I checked; about a
two-quart difference.) The parts involved have 11657, 11655, and 11608 part
numbers for the dipstick-in-crankcase version, and 11615 or 11634 part numbers
for the dipstick-in-sump version. Among the cars I cannot find a 11657 model,
but the 11608 was the original 1972 Alfetta 1.8, so at least some carbureted
Alfettas had the dipstick in the cylinder block on the exhaust side.
Presumably John Fielding's 01678 engine is a later variant which does have the
dipstick where he says it does.

 Peace-

John H. (the one in North Carolina)
