Regarding having trouble filling your gas tank hands-free:

A trick I learned from a good friend (the person who turned me on to 911s, 
in fact) is to invert the pump handle before inserting the tip into the 
gas filler opening. You can prop the handle against the filler door and 
walk away. With this method, the system seems to ventilate better and it 
doesn't trigger itself to shut off prematurely. 

Other than this, setting the pump on the slowest fill rate works too. (But 
it's slow.)
