Replacing 105 Clutch Pedal Shaft

Darn. The grey berlina broke that pesky clutch shaft that mounts in the
pedal box, and is actuated by depressing the clutch pedal through which it
fits. As it rotates the lever at its end pushes in on the clutch master
cylinder. This is a common failure and occurs when the weld that attaches
the lever to the shaft breaks. I've made this repair before, but I believe
that it was such an unpleasant PITA that I've purged it from memory.

Question: Do I have to remove the pedal box the replace the
shaft? In other words disconnect the clutch and brake hydraulics, then
manhandle the masters/booster/pedal box assembly from the firewall (while
spewing brake fluid all over my 4 year old paint job that still looks
pretty good)?

The worst part is that when I installed that pedal box after painting the
engine bay, I used windshield urethane for a leak free seal to the
firewall. The damn thing will never come off...
