Other than Pat Braden, for example, what BMW owner would ever consider 
something like that -- even in a joke?

The new Lexus convertible hardtop (AKA Skyliner-san) costs about $US60k.

I think the new Ford "recapture my yoot" Thunderbird retails around US$50 
(but they will throw in 8 tracks of the Coasters and the Drifters or 
Mantovani and Jan & Dean).

How much am I bid for a real Alfa?
