Re: alfa-digest V8 #41 - okay a real question this time....

If your throttle is not closing completely, it will make the car
crack, pop and back fire. In fact, I have been guilty of leaving a foot
partly on the throttle when decelerating in my really loud 82 Spider just to
drown out some rice rocket hot shot.
On the clutch job, consider replacing the pilot bushing and make sure
the kit includes the throw out bearing. I have never replaced a pressure
plate. I have thrown some pressure plates in the iron pile, but have found
most pressure plates to be good enough to reuse.
And, yes, the clutch tool is really nice. Beats cutting up a
transmission input shaft to make a tool like I used to do. With the ring on
the flywheel of the Alfa, getting the clutch disk centered is pretty tough
without the tool. With a flat flywheel such as found on most American iron,
you can get the disk centered by feeling around the outside edge. If the
disk is not centered, you will have a really hard time stabbing the
transmission back into place.
