Tire choices (non Alfa)

Hi group -
I come seeking the wisdom of the assembled throng. My GTI needs tires.
The tread is starting to look like it was Xeroxed on, I took off the
(crummy) Goodyear GAs one month after I bought the car, and replaced
them Yoko AVSi's. I maintained the stock 205/50 x 15 size. I may have
the option of (cheaply) moving to 16" wheels, which would mean going to
205/45s. The guys at Wesco Tire, here in the San Fernando Valley have
suggested Bridgestone re730s as a good bet. I asked about Yokohama
530s, but they had little exzperience with them.
Question becomes two-fold. If I stay with the 15" wheels, what is good
enough out there, remembering that AVSis are no longer available? If I
move up to 16" my choices seem more numberous, but what is good?
Comments/ Experiences with various brands?
Sorry for the non-Alfa specific content, but thanks for any help.
