gtv6 clutch whine and poor brake performance

The brakes in my newly acquired 86 gtv6 never felt quite right...
Especially when cold, their performance was downright scary... In an
attempt to remedy the situation, I had new front rotors installed (the
old ones where below spec) and changed all the pads (front and rear) to
decent metalic AXXIS. Now, although things are a little better, the car
still doesn't brake nearly as well as my 85 gtv6 does that uses the same
brand of pads. The booster works fine and the pedal is firm. I suspect
that maybe for some reason the rear calipers are not doing their part of
the job (stopping in reverse is even worse than stopping forward
motion)... Is there a certain procedure to check the brake regulator?
Any other possible suspects? Could the M/C be bad even through the
pedal is still firm?

An unrelated problem: There is a moderately loud whine that comes
from the front of the transaxle (right where the clutch housing is) when
the car idles. It doesn't sound like a bad bearing and it doesn't
change when the clutch pedal is pressed or released. Any ideas what
that could be?

Thanks in advance,
Vangelis
