Why are there so many failures doing head gasket replacements?  #1.  Both 
surfaces, head and block MUST be spotlessly clean and dry.
#2. Both surfaces must be block sanded to eliminate any scratches which are
valleys the gasket cannot seal from oil or coolant leaks.  No matter how
much torque, no part of the gasket can get to the bottom of those valleys!
#3. Once the surfaces are cleaned and dry, do not touch with bare fingers
which deposit finger oils.
#4.  Keep your fingers OFF either side of the new gaskets!  Wear  clean
gloves like a doctor does.
Any kind of lubricant touching the gasket surfaces will defeat the built in
adhesive.   Use your heads doing head work.  Any arguments?  Fred Di Matteo
