Somebody from South Africa asked if anyone knew what a shipping ton was. 
Yes, but are you referring to Thames measurement?

Shipping Ton is a unit of volume, not weight and derives (supposedly) from 
the days of the Spanish empire when ship capacity was measured in the 
number of tuns (what we'd call barrels, or casks, or possibly hogsheads) of 
wine the hold could...er..well hold.
