In AD7-1383 Ed Evangelista asks "on the old cast iron spiders there are 3
pieces on the muffler system. i can't figure out if there are 2 mufflers and
one resonator or 2 resonators and one muffler... does anyone have any info on
this??"
Some. If there are three mufflerish thingies, AND if the system is stock, the
big one in the middle is the silencer, and the other two aren't. The
ironblock 2000 Roadsters (Roadsters, not Spiders, in the parts book and shop
manual, although Spiders in Fusi) came wih two different exhaust systems, one
with one silencer and the other with two silencers. The earlier system had
two downpipes joining into one before entering #102.00.09.010.00, which is
called an "expansion chamber"; from there it passes to #102.04.09.012.00, the
silencer, then exits (with a joint) over the axle to a tailpipe which
includes #102.04.09.011.00, which is also called an "expansion chamber". The
later system has the two downpipes separate until they have entered
#102.04.30.010.00, which looks the same as the first expansion chamber but is
called a "baffle"; it then leads to #102.04.30.016.00, the secondary silencer
(secondary, even though it comes first) and then to #102.04.30.012.00, the
main silencer. The tailpipe and its various parts are the same as in the
earlier system except that the #102.04.09.011.00, previously called an
"expansion chamber", is now called a "baffle."
There is no indication of when the changeover occurred.
Lacking an English/American dictionary, I assume that expansion chamber,
baffle, and resonator are approximately the same thing.
I also would assume that in a forty-year-old car the exhaust system may not
be strictly "factory".
Plug: there is nothing quite like having both a shop manual and a parts book
when such questions come up. AROC, despite criticisms sometimes hurled at the
magazine (which is produced by a contractor, not by the Club) has useful
aspects, including the Technical Library which can supply photocopies of
Owner's Manuals, Shop Manuals, and Parts Books. Photocopies are not
necessarily cheap, but they often beat winging it.
