My tandem boat trailer had hollow spindles with a zerk
fitting in the end of the spindle.  There were two
holes behind the inner bearing and when you put the
grease gun on it and pumped, it forced all the old
grease, river water, tadpole skeletons and whatever,
out the front through both roller races.  If you did
it frequently, NO Worries, as our friends down under
say.  
I always wondered why they didn't do it with cars. 
Spindles DO break, so I suppose it would weaken them
substantially, plus, there would be little or no after
market for bearings.  Bearing buddies are good, but
they force grease against the seal and you can get air
pockets.  Still better than nothing but I doubt you'll
find them to fit an Alfa wheel hub.
