Actually, the WSJ article was on police cars that had an after market brake
light flasher units installed.
What happened was the brake flashers fooled the brake/shifter interlock into
thinking the brake was pressed so you could put the car in gear without your
foot being on the brake. All the cases dealing with the "unintended"
acceleration were where the officer had his/her foot on the accelerator and
put it into gear thinking he/she had the brake pressed. The car was only
doing what it was told to do, given the gas being pressed instead of the
brake.
